Should we calculate or measure energy expenditure? Practical aspects in the ICU
This review focuses on why indirect calorimetry should be used in clinical practice of critical care medicine and which are the benefits of using indirect calorimetry and which are the disadvantages of using predictive equation.
Considering that "The energy prescription in critically ill patients requires precision and accuracy to avoid the deleterious effects of under- and overfeeding" the use of Indirect Calorimetry "may provide accurate REE values across groups of patients and diseases and does not rely on the input of estimated parameters".
The review concludes that "REE measurements should replace the conventional practice of REE calculation. Energy provision guided by IC together with an effective strategy to deliver the prescribed calories are the key to minimize energy debt and optimize the advantages of nutritional support".
