Nutritional assessment with Q-NRG+ for a pilot-study on Long Covid at UZ Bruxelles
Long COVID is a new phenomenon, in which individuals who experienced a SARS-CoV-2 infection still experience one or more symptoms, such as exercise intolerance, fatigue and/or muscle pains in addition to other COVID-related symptoms, weeks to months after initial infection.
In this video we listen to Hilde Rossignol story. She suffers from severe symptoms since her Covid infection more than two years ago and partecipated in the pilot-study "UNLOCK: Nutrition and LOComotoric rehabilitation in long-Covid" promoted by Elisabeth De Waele, Head Department of Clinical Nutrition & Dietetics at UZ Brussel, in collaboration with the Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation department of the UZ Brussel Hospital and the VUB Rehabilitation Research Group.
The aim of this study is to learn about which complaints patients continue to experience after their infection and how this affects their lives to a greater or lesser extent and whether a patient-tailored physical rehabilitation programme combined with individualised nutritional therapy leads to a faster recovery compared to a classic exercise program with the physiotherapist.
They investigated to what extent a personalised approach to nutrition and exercise is feasible for these people, and to what extent this approach can improve the physical performance, daily functioning and quality of life of these patients. The nutritional assessment was performed with COSMED Q-NRG+ Metabolic Monitor that uses Indirect Calorimetry to represent patients' metabolic status providing precious indications on response to nutrition plans.
The results showed that a patient-tailored physical rehabilitation programme, nutritional therapy based on indirect calorimetry follow up and quality of food accelerates the natural healing process of Long Covid in 3 months: intervention group walks longer and has a better quality of life.
